Wednesday 12th January 2011 - Harbinger rated best horse in the world 2010
"Harbinger, the highest rated four year-old since Alleged in 1978, was officially 6lb better than any other horse in the world last year and 7lb better than Derby and Arc winner Workforce.
Announcing the 2010 World Thoroughbred Rankings in London, senior BHA Handicapper Phil Smith explained that Harbinger’s rating of 135, a pound lower than Sea The Stars last year, was conservative and there had been an argument to rate him 137 on his 11-length King George victory at Ascot, but it was the “devil’s own job” to rate wide-margin winners
“We went through the runner up Cape Blanco [the Irish Derby winner] and it’s very rare to use a horse beaten so far as a marker,” he said. “What characterised Harbinger’s season was that the form of all his wins worked out. Normally there’s always a horse to crab the form, but it all fitted nicely.”
